Tammy Mui is a Master's student under the supervision of ICEBERGS Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Don Sin.  She is studying the biological basis of gender differences in COPD.  Women seem to be more susceptible to developing COPD than males, but the reason why is currently unknown.  A cause for this sexual dimorphism could be differences in sex hormones.  Therefore she will be investigating the female sex hormone, estrogen, in male and female COPD patients.  In particular, she will be looking at estrogen and estrogen receptor levels and their relationship to lung function and COPD stages.
